Compassionate Care ALS (CCALS) is a nonprofit organization offering a range of services tailored to meet the needs of individuals with ALS, their families and caregivers as they navigate the disease. Strata partnered with CCALS on a master plan to transform a previous residential property in Boulder, CO, into a Caregiver Retreat - a restorative space where caregivers of ALS patients can relax, recharge, and decompress from the demands of caregiving.

The existing backyard presented both challenges and opportunities, including a 12-foot grade change across the site. This topography inspired the creation of a series of interconnected terraces, each designed to provide a unique experience and sense of refuge. Working closely with CCALS and the property owner, the design team preserved the spirit of the original landscape and gardens while enhancing the space to better support comfort, wellness, and connection. The final design includes a bridge entry, fire pit area, lounge terrace, dining terrace, flex lawn space, waterfall feature, and a semi-enclosed yoga studio.
