WEST END 38

West End 38 is a 2.8-acre mixed-use community in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. The development features three stories housing 165 apartment units over ground-floor retail. Outdoor spaces were prioritized for pedestrian and bike-friendly environments that activate the street and support local businesses.

A generous setback from 38th Avenue created opportunities for oversized, uniquely shaped planters with integrated seatwalls, offering inviting spaces for neighbors and restaurant patrons. The site’s history as a flower nursery inspired the use of vertical trellis structures, curated plant palettes, and pavement patterns and materials that celebrate the area’s heritage.

Within the interior courtyard, a pool and a variety of gathering spaces are framed by dense plantings, creating a lush, private retreat for residents. Additionally, a wide passageway flanked by planting and enhanced by Tivoli lights was created to provide casual seating, as well as to visually connect to the elementary school and park across Upham Street.

Terry Stone worked on the West End 38 apartments while at Stone Landscape Architecture.
